Waking Up to the unexpected – Advent Week 4

Matthew 1:18-25

Dream

There are times in our lives when the circumstances and the change in our plans cause us to wonder whether God is really engaged in our world or not. Sometimes what we have always known is not necessarily what God wants to use to reveal himself through. The entire Advent season is about reminding us to be ready to see and respond to God’s very real presence in our lives. Joseph, the stepfather of Jesus came to a place where he had to decide if he should follow what was his right, to divorce Mary, the soon to be mother of his stepson Jesus, or do what he felt God leading him to do.

Reflection Questions

  • Do you know God in such a way that you would recognize His voice?
  • Are you afraid to follow where God is leading you?

Waking Up to the unexpected – Advent Week 3

Matthew 11:2-11

Have you ever felt like you’ve done all the right things in life but still haven’t gotten what you deserved?  Maybe it was a promotion at the workplace or some kind of special recognition.  Last week we met John the Baptist, a man who had the wilderness at his disposal.  A man who was considered to be the greatest of all men at that time.  John the Baptist did everything right.  But this week we find that the man of the wild is now the man of confinement.  There could be no worse fate for John the Baptist than prison but that is where he will spend the rest of his life.  This appears to be John the Baptist’s reward for right living.  This week in our Advent series, John the Baptist has woken up to the unexpected in the worst kind of way.  The only question now is how will Jesus respond?

Reflection Questions

  • Do you recognize what Jesus did on the cross for you? Do you see the length, depth, and height of God’s love in your life?
  • Are you allowing the love of God to shape your life for the sake of others?
  • What can you do this coming week to show the love of God to those at the end of their rope?

Waking Up to the unexpected – Advent Week 2

Matthew 3: 1-12

The word advent literally means coming. We use it in phrases like, “It is the Advent of a new season or new age.” It is the dawn of something that is about to happen. The challenge for us is, how do we prepare to see what we are about to experience? Will we be watching and waiting? God wants to wake us up, to the unexpected.

Reflection Questions

  • Have you repented with your life and not just with your words?
  • How are you making your life ready to see Jesus?
  • Is God leading you to be baptized or reaffirm your baptism?

Waking Up to the unexpected – Advent Week 1

Matthew 24: 36-44

The word advent literally means coming. We use it in phrases like, “It is the Advent of a new season or new age.” It is the dawn of something that is about to happen. The challenge for us is, how do we prepare to see what we are about to experience? Will we be watching and waiting? God wants to wake us up, to the unexpected.

Reflection Questions

  • Are we ready for God to show up in our lives?
  • What do we need to do to wake ourselves up so we can recognize Jesus when he comes?

Living Space

Luke 23:33-43 and Matthew 7:13-14

In order to have living space in our lives we must give our lives entirely to the Kingship of Jesus. The rest that he offers for the core of our being can sustain us no matter what kind of craziness erupts around us. He is the kind of King that has given his very life so that we might live.

Reflection Questions

  • Do you even recognize Jesus in your life?
  • Have you allowed Jesus to be the King of all of your life?

Life Application:
This week spend 2 to 5 minutes each day reflecting on areas of your life that you might be withholding from Jesus and in prayer give those areas to Him.

Living Space – Financial Rest

1 Timothy 6:6-20, Matthew 6:19-21, Malachi 3:10

There is nothing that produces anxiety in our lives quite like finances. It soaks up an incredible amount of our mental energy and can exhaust us. The living space and the rest that Jesus wants us to experience also includes finding rest with our finances. It is out of this living space that we can find freedom to give and freedom to be generous with our resources. We can have a deep rooted rest for our souls when we are free to give. This is financial living space.

Reflection Questions

  • Do you trust God for everything in your life?
  • Are you being wise with your finances so that you can be generous?

Life Application:
This week pay attention to what you are doing with of your resources.

Our Mission

2 Corinthians 3:16

Every person longs for a deep sense of purpose.  We attach our lives to things and causes and issues because basically we are looking for some sort of life fulfillment.
The reality is many times religion is seen as anything but fulfilling. That’s why the life that Jesus offers us is one in which the Spirit of God is filling us and shaping us into the ultimate goal of creation itself, to become more like Jesus, for the sake of others. This is the fulfilling life Jesus wants for us.

Reflection Questions

  • Will you open yourself up to the life Jesus is offering you?
  • Are you allowing the Spirit of God to shape your life?
  • Are you becoming more like Jesus?

Movement

1 Thessalonians 5:17, Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28: 18-19, Psalm 37: 4

If everyone was honest, the main desire of their heart is contentment and joy. It’s only through movement towards God and in Him that we will find this joy.

We value movement…

God is leading all of us to take the next right step in our faith.

Radical Hospitality

Luke 14:25-33, Luke 9:21-27, Philippians 2:1-11

After his resurrection, Jesus commanded his disciples to go and make disciples of all nations.  We have typically understood this as to go to the nations.  But the way that our world is shifting, the nations are coming right to our door step.  How, then, do we create space for the church and the community to collide in a culture where even the smallest act of hospitality is considered radical?

Reflection Questions

  • Where can you offer radical hospitality locally?
  • Where is God calling you to serve at Fremont Nazarene Church?

Jesus Living

Luke 14:25-33, Luke 9:21-27, Philippians 2:1-11

At the heart of what it means to be a follower of Jesus is how our lives actually begin to look more and more like Him.  And when we are honest about what that looks like it sometimes can make us uncomfortable. We are invited to lay down our lives for the adventure that comes with “Jesus living.” This is our second value at Fremont Nazarene Church.  The way we live must be inspired by Jesus Christ.

Reflection Questions

  • What is holding you back from joining the adventure?
  • How much do you really love Jesus?
  • In what ways this week can you live more like Jesus?

Restore Life

John 14:12-18, John 16:13-15

God has such big dreams for our lives. But sometimes we struggle to understand His dream for us. There are even times we wrestle with whether or not we want to embrace what He has for us because of what we might have to give up. The reality is we have to come to grips with it if we want to experience the fullness of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. And it can only come from the help of the Holy Spirit who reveals God’s dream in us and through us. This is the only way the church can actually live up to the calling and purpose that God has for it.  We must be guided by the Holy Spirit in everything we do.

Reflection Questions

  • Do you love Jesus enough to give him your life?
  • Do you love Him with all that you are?
  • Will you be obedient to the Holy Spirit’s leading?

Restore Life

Matthew 8:5-13

Sorry No Audio this week

Life can be a roller coaster kind of experience.  We get tugged from one thing to the next.  We find ourselves at times defined by the chaos and business.  It isn’t that being busy or active is bad, but what defines us matters.  A vision is meant to help us focus on what we really want and need to define us. We need a life-giving vision in order to be a life giving people. A vision wrapped around Jesus who has come to restore life!

Reflection Questions

  • What defines who you are?
  • What is the condition of your faith?
  • Will you commit to being a restorer of life?

Week 5
8.28.2016

we are what we believe

Scripture: Matthew 5:31-46

When who we are becoming flows out of what we believe it impacts the way we live our everyday lives.  This is what Jesus wants for his followers. What we believe about the afterlife and how our lives will be measured in the end should impact how we live in the now. Ultimately there should be no surprises when God makes an assessment of our lives. The question isn’t “Will I make it to heaven,” it’s “Do I realize that eternity has already begun?”

Reflection Questions

  • In the end, what will be the assessment of your life?
  • Are you naturally seeing the world through the eyes of Jesus?
  • Have you embraced the kingdom of heaven in your life?

Week 4

we are what we believe

Romans 12:2, Galatians 5:22-26, 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

There is more to being a follower of Jesus than just being a good person and not doing bad things. A follower of Jesus is a person who is on the path of experiencing God’s dream for their lives. A dream where love overcomes the nightmares of evil. The question is how does this happen.  How can anyone ever be good enough in the eyes of God to claim their living the life He wants for them?  The answer lies squarely on the work of the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit restores us to the masterpiece of the Creator’s dream for our lives.

Reflection Questions

  • Do you realize God has a dream for your life?
  • Are you receptive to the voice of the Holy Spirit?
  • Do you believe that the Holy Spirit has the power to work in your life?

8.21.2016

we are what we believe

Acts 26:17-18, Ephesians 1:7-10, 1
Peter 2:22-25, Romans 8:1-3

There is an epic struggle between God and the external powers of darkness and creation has been caught in the cross hairs. Evil bullies creation and distorts it’s beauty. However the one who rules with evil has been backed into a corner because his defeat is continuing to unfold. Christ has conquered and He continues to conquer, overcoming evil with love. He is giving us the hope and ability to live free from the strongholds of God’s enemy. When we allow this belief to actually impact who we are becoming it is a blow to the powers of darkness because then the power of Christ is flowing through us.

Reflection Questions

  • Is Christ the King of you life?
  • Are you living a life defined by Christ’s victory over evil?
  • Have you tapped into the power of Christ’s love?

Week 2
8.14.2016

we are what we believe

Genesis 3,  Ephesians 6:10-12

Creation has been infected by an external darkness that is at work all around us. This darkness can also be described as sin, which has wreaked havoc on creation since the moment that humans chose to trust in themselves instead of the Creator. The external darkness began to oppress and distort the beauty that was put in us by the Creator.  The struggle is fierce and real, we see it unfold all around us daily.  We have a choice either to give in to the forces and allow the external to overtake the internal of our lives, or participate in God’s restoration plan to push back the darkness once and for all.

Reflection Questions

  • Have you asked God to open your eyes to the sin in your life?
  • Are you aware of your need for a Savior?
  • Are you participating in God’s restoration plan?

Week 1

we are what we believe

2 Timothy 3:15-17, John 1:1-5, 10-14

The Bible is the story of God.  It reveals to us how God has been present and interacted with creation through all time.  And it calls us to not only play our parts in the story that continues to unfold, but to actually become the story. When Scripture invades and takes hold of our lives then God’s love, revealed through Jesus, becomes evident through the way we live. Instead of applying it or beating others with it, we must allow it to come to life in us. We believe that everything we need to know about how to experience the life God wants for us has been inspired by God’s Spirit through Scripture.

Reflection Questions

  • Have you allowed God’s story to invade your life?
  • When was the last time you felt the Scriptures bringing you life?
  • Are you simply applying words or are you actually living God’s story?

inDependence – journey from slavery to freedom

Exodus 19:1-11, 16-20

Every day we are surrounded by thousands of stories and thousands of gods. Every one of these stories and every one of these gods wants us to identify with them.  Once we identify with these stories and with these gods they enslave us.  It’s just like Egypt and Israel all over again.  The Exodus became the story in which the Israelites found their identity.  But as the Israelites were set free from Egypt by God we know that Jesus has set us free.  The Jesus story is our identity as God’s people today.

Reflection Questions

  • Have you accepted other stories into your life which are competing for the place of God’s story?
  • Do you remember that you are a child of God and that Jesus has set you free?
  • Where can you be a part of God’s work in the world?
  • What can you do to help someone experience Christ in their life?

Exodus 14:10-31

The people of Israel were faced with incredible barriers to their true freedom.  When they found themselves between the forces of the Egyptian Pharaoh and the mighty waters of the Red Sea it seemed that their freedom would be short lived.  The truth is, their freedom had not come to full fruition.  God again reveals His relentless pursuit of His people and His commitment to His mission of restoring all of creation. The true independence that God wants to bring to our lives requires that we become more and more dependent upon Him.

Reflection Questions

  • Are you trusting God with your life?
  • Do you find yourself looking back instead of toward the future God wants for you?
  • What do you need to do to depend more upon God?

inDependence – journey from slavery to freedom

Exodus 5 – 11

Breaking down the walls of our reality in exchange for God’s reality isn’t easy.  This is true especially when we become attached to what we believe is all we have in order to exist.  Oppression takes on many forms in our culture and society and the evil that props it up and feeds the power of oppression in our lives will do everything it can to push back against the freedom and hope that God brings into this world.  It will even feed us a lie to try and cause us to believe we are less than what God has placed inside of us  But our God is fighting for us!

Reflection Questions

  • What is standing in the way of your freedom?
  • Do you realize you were made in God’s image?
  • Can you see God at work in your life and in this world?

The freedom God offers us is not going to be without struggles and challenges.  There is no doubt evil causes a resistance to this freedom because, frankly there is nothing more powerful on this planet than a person who understands the mission God has for their lives.  True freedom is knowing our identity and realizing that the one who Created us is calling us to a much bigger purpose than what our shortsightedness sometimes allows us to see.

Reflection Questions

  • Are you resisting the life that God is calling you to?
  • Can you see what God’s mission is for your life?
  • Are you living into the mission of God?

inDependence – journey from slavery to freedom

Exodus 1:8-22

The journey to freedom from slavery God calls us to is not necessarily the kind of individual freedom we are used to  celebrating.  The freedom God offers us is a freedom to live in Him. Which means it sets us free to live the way we were meant to live from the very beginning.  However, that requires us to trust that His freedom is better than any other idea of freedom that exists. It all comes back to trusting God.
Reflection Questions

  • Are you living in oppression?
  • Do you trust God’s freedom that He offers you?
  • Are you willing to risk being uncomfortable in order to be free?

Jonah – In Over Our Heads

Jonah 3:1-10

When someone hurts us or makes choices we deem as wrong we’re often tempted to hope they get what they deserve. Sometimes we even write people off.  The Old Testament preacher Jonah had a problem with the people who lived in a city called Nineveh. The people of Nineveh had a bad history when it came to how they treated Jonah’s people, so no one could really blame him. The problem was God did not write them off, and he wanted Jonah to be his representative to show them His love and mercy.  There is no one beyond the reach of God’s love and mercy, because God does care. God doesn’t write Jonah off and gives him another chance to do what was right.
For Reflection:

  • Do you realize that God hasn’t given up on you?
  • Have you written off someone or a people group?
  • Is God speaking to you about how you are representing Him?

Jonah – In Over Our Heads

Jonah 1:17-2:10

There’s no doubt that in life we all face waves and storms that mess up our best-laid plans. We often look at our circumstances and find ourselves becoming overwhelmed, but God offers us a different perspective and outlook.  We have to see life and our world through the lens of His mercy and love. It is so powerful that it literally has the ability to lift us from whatever hell we find ourselves in.  Unfortunately, we often give in to the darkness instead of accepting the rescue that He offers.
For Reflection:

  • Are you in the belly of a fish?
  • Have you accepted the rescue that God is offering you?
  • Do you live a love and mercy-filled life?

Jonah – In Over Our Heads

Jonah 1:1-4, 7-12

We’ve all been in a situation where we were in over our heads and wanted to run away as far as possible.  Sometimes our lives just get so messy with all the commitments we make and all the

demands and responsibilities we have that we start looking for ways to escape.  While we all need rest sometimes we fall into the temptation of our own plans because we want to be in control.

Jonah was a prophet who wanted to escape his life.  Everything seemed to be going according to Jonah’s plan until a powerful storm wakes him up.  That’s when Jonah realizes that instead of taking control of his fate he had actually put it into the hands of the sea.  And the consequences of Jonah’s plan has not only put his life in danger but also the lives of the other men on the boat.

For Reflection:

  • Are you in over your head right now?  What is it in your life that is causing you anxiety?
  • Have you put your plans into God’s hands?
  • Where in your life do you need to find rest?

“The Artisan Soul – Crafting Your Life into a Work of Art” Part 2

In today’s talk we are finishing the series called The Artisan Soul. We are looking at what it means to respond to God’s desire for us to live extraordinary lives. In order for us to be able to live the life God wants for us, we have to first give Him our lives. And to give Him our lives means we are giving  God the very best of what we have to offer Him. God wants to bring redemption and healing to the world around us. He wants to create life and healing in a world where there is brokenness and a sense of hopelessness. Over this coming week, take some time to pray and reflect on these questions:

>Are you bringing your very best to God? If not, what’s holding you back?

>How does it make you feel to know that you’re a work of art created by God?

>What do you think God wants to create through you? What do you have that He can work with?

>You are encouraged to read about two of Jesus’ miracles in John 2:1-11 and John 9:1-11.

“The Artisan Soul” – Crafting Your Life into a Work of Art

Today we’re going to be talking about
“The Artisan Soul.” Do we realize just how much potential every one of us have to live extraordinary lives? An artist is someone who
creates. And when they create they pour themselves into their creation. You could even say that a part of them exist in their creation.
Genesis 1:27 reads “So God created human beings in His own image. In the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.” Are we living up to the extraordinary potential put in us by our Creator Who has poured Himself into us, His creation?

List some unique and creative abilities that God has given you.

If you don’t feel like you’re living an extraordinary life, what do you think is holding you back?

“Being Real” Series 3rd Week

Today in our talk Pastor Aaron will be wrapping up our three week series called “Being Real”: How we live matters. We’ve talked about the fact that there are distinct characteristics that should be found in a life centered around Jesus Christ. And as Christ followers we are to live lives with intention and purpose.

That purpose is to live like Jesus.
To see the world like Jesus.
To treat others like Jesus.
To care about what Jesus cares about.

As we look at Ephesians 6:10-20 the author uses the metaphor of putting on a spiritual armor. This armor is to protect ourselves from distractions and the evil that exists that can cause us to miss the purpose God has for our lives. This protection comes from truth, justice, peace, faith, salvation, and the Spirit—interpreted here as God’s Word.

In our talk Pastor Aaron will continue in the series ‘Being Real’: how we live matters. We’ll be looking at Ephesians 5:15-20. The life of a Christ follower is one lived with intention and focus. That’s because Jesus’ way of life gives us that focus and purpose we are looking for to guide our lives. It’s a life that is filled with God’s Presence and His Spirit.
At the end of the day we need to ask ourselves:

  • What are we filling our lives up with?
  • Are we living wise or unwise?

When it comes to being a Christ follower, how we live matters.

“Being Real” Series 1st Week

We’re beginning a series called Being Real: How we live matters. Over the next 3 weeks we’re going to look at passages from the book of Ephesians found in the new testament of the Bible. The Apostle Paul writes about what a Christ Follower’s life should look like and how we can live in community with each other.

Today in our talk we’ll be looking at Ephesians 4:25-5:2. We’re going to talk about what drives the way we live?

Do we realize what God has done for us?

Are we living a life filled with love?
