History
The relationship began more than 20 years ago in a small meeting room at Holiday Lodge. This faithful journey started when the Rev. Tom Shaw, a Blair native, fresh from Bible College, followed his call to begin ministering to the Fremont community.
"While we were students at Nazarene Bible College, God began to speak to my wife and I in regards to the need of a church in the community of Fremont," Shaw said. "After two months of prayer and searching God's will, we contacted the Nebraska District Superintendent and told him we wanted to open the new work in Fremont. Following the first meeting of the advisory board, we were informed of their approval and definite planning was under way."
After 16 months of meeting at the Holiday Lodge, the growing group of God's people were led to a building located at Eighth and C streets for an additional seven months.
"In July of 1984 we rented a warehouse north of town from Sol Harr," Shaw said. "We ended up buying it and began a renovating process that went on for 10 years."
Shaw said although he has numerous memories of the past 20 years, acquiring the land where the present structure sits is one that stands out in his mind.
"When this land became available, it had not been for sale," Shaw said. "We contacted ten land owners and tried to buy land and nothing was opening up. The farm manager for this property then approached us. It wasn't even on the market."
At that time Shaw said the Church of the Nazarene was out "in the middle of nowhere." "We believe, without any question, this was a divine work of God. His sovereignty brought us to this location."
Shaw said the congregation is not only looking back at 20 years of how God has blessed us, it is time to look forward. "This is simply just a transition," he said. "It's a time of reflecting on blessings, but also focusing on direction."
